The statement regarding Dr. Rodney Hill’s concerns about denturists not having the educational background to X-ray and perform a proper diagnosis of possible underlying pathology that could exist in the oral cavity is valid, however, licensed denturists  do not diagnose. They, in fact, encourage denture patients to see their dentist or oral surgeon for oral cancer screenings, as is stated in the Wyoming State Denturist Association website (www.wysda.org).
Licensed denturists, as outlined in the initiative “Wyoming Denturism Act”, have no problem referring patients to their dentist and/or physician. Licensed denturists do, however, have a problem with the tactics used by some dentists: including fallacies such as cancer scares that have been used in other states attempting to regulate denturists.
There are some dentists who will use a variety of tactics to discredit the denturist profession. Dr. Hill’s concerns regarding the level of patient care are ill-founded at best. In any profession, the level of care given to each patient lies on an individual basis. Like many other professions denturists build their practices through referrals from other patients. If a professional’s ethics are found lacking, there are no referrals, and the business fails.
The “Wyoming Denturism Act” initiative has strict requirements regulating denturists in Wyoming. This initiative can be viewed at the Wyoming State Denturist Association website. The upcoming “Wyoming Denturism Act” initiative and possible legislation through the 2007 legislative session will give people of Wyoming the same freedom of choice other states have for denture care.
